thinkTRIBE’s roundtable sparks lively discussions on peak traffic preparation

20th June 2016

If there’s one thing even more rewarding than collaborating with clients to develop a web performance strategy that really works, it’s getting round the table to share our ideas with a view to creating even better systems and processes as we move forward.

Tribe’s ‘roundtable’ events are becoming increasingly popular with clients and other delivery partners, who are keen to learn from each other’s experiences and to try out fresh approaches within their own teams.

The challenge of maintaining optimal web performance during periods of peak demand is one that’s facing every retailer in every market sector. So informed discussions on how to best plan for high-traffic scenarios while avoiding the very public pitfalls that result from the failures of an overstretched infrastructure can be hugely beneficial.

Solving problems to the power of ten

June’s breakfast meeting at the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel in central London was attended by thinkTRIBEs clients and partners from the travel and retail sectors – including Dreams, Dixons Carphone, Neilson and Transport for London amongst others. Rowena Bellamy, web development manager for Thorntons opened the meeting by sharing her extensive experience of calibrating web performance to respond to spikes in traffic – including for the Queen’s Jubilee website.

The challenges around the topic of managing performance for peak traffic periods formed the basis for the morning’s discussions, including the problems of creating a realistic traffic profile, the issues surrounding testing in a live environment and the benefits of planning testing as part of a wider programme, rather than as a last-minute response to a looming deadline.

We also explored the notion of establishing – and pushing – limits, as well as tackling unpredictable demands and implementing contingency solutions such as queuing options. Further discussions included the cross-departmental cooperation needed to match load capabilities to planned marketing initiatives, as well as a few tips for managing Black Friday expectations and effective optimisation techniques.
